About Our Products

Boutique Furniture Paint

Carts & Millie Boutique Furniture Paint is a water-based chalky finish, mineral paint perfect for furniture and home décor. It is non-toxic, asthma and allergy friendly, and very low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound). We believe it is important to use products in our homes that are low or no VOC, which are toxic chemicals that evaporate or “off gas” into the air over time, causing many health issues. Our paint is mould and mildew resistant, water resistant and self-sealing, which makes it ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. Your piece will dry with a velvety-smooth, chalky matt finish with minimal brush strokes when using a good quality brush. An unsealed piece is easily wiped over with a warm soapy cloth, without risk of lifting the paint.

How to use Boutique Furniture Paint:

  1. Clean with a degreaser, sugar soap or similar, to ensure it is free of dirt, dust and residue. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry completely.
  2. For shiny, glossy and non-porous surfaces, we recommend our Boutique Primer and Adhesive Bond. It promotes superior adhesion, blocks light stains, grease and oil and prepares a great foundation for light colours. For surfaces that may be susceptible to tannin bleed, we recommend the use of shellac or a shellac-based product.
  3. Shake the bottle for 15-30 seconds to redistribute any pigment that may have settled during storage, then pour into a cup or disposable plate. Carts & Millie Paint is thinner than some other chalk style paints, just the way we like it! We have formulated it to give better coverage with less drag.
  4. Apply one, two or three coats depending on the colour you have chosen. Lighter colours will require more coats (especially over dark pieces), darker colours will require less. Coverage is 14-18sqm/L.
  5. Recoat in 20-30 minutes, or until touch dry in warmer weather. You can also use a hair dryer or heat gun to help it dry faster, it will not crack the finish. Cured in up to 30 days.
  6. Carts & Millie Boutique Furniture Paint is self-sealing, self-leveling and water resistant, but for high traffic surfaces you may choose to seal with Boutique Hemp Furniture Oil, Boutique Furniture Wax or your favourite non-yellowing polycrylic for extra protection.
  7. Clean your brushes with soapy water. Do not pour down drains or wash brushes in sinks that lead to waterways.

Boutique Hemp Furniture Oil

Carts & Millie Boutique Furniture Hemp Oil is made from 100% natural hemp seeds, and dries to a clear, low sheen protective layer. It is a high-grade, chemical free, VOC free, biodegradable finishing product that nourishes raw timber and protects painted finishes. It penetrates deep into the grain or paint and once cured it is a hardened layer resistant to chipping and cracking. Use to rejuvenate tired dry cutting boards and utensils, as it is food-safe and does not contain solvents, additives or preservatives.

How to use Boutique Hemp Furniture Oil:

  1. Clean surface with a degreaser, sugar soap or similar, to ensure it is free of dirt, dust and residue. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry completely.
  2. Decant into a cup and apply with a soft bristled brush, or pour onto a clean, lint free cloth and wipe onto the surface.
  3. Leave hemp oil for a minimum of four hours, or preferably overnight. Wipe and buff excess oil from the surface with a clean cloth. Complete drying may take a few days as deeper excess oil rises to the top, wipe further with a cloth if necessary. Cured in 30 days, use gently. A 250ml bottle covers 4- 10 square metres. A previously oiled or painted surface will require very little oil, whereas raw timber will require more, especially if it is old and dry.
  4. Clean brush with a degreasing detergent.
